The campus had outgrown its new physical facilities, and the shortage of adequate parking spaces had become a major problem. He also worked as a translator and had a second career as a bookseller, specializing in mystery novels. He was 102. He maintained relationships such as those with Alan Wolfe and his University of Chicago peers for years. Arvidson's leadership and administrative abilities had been recognized by his colleagues; he served twice as chair and twice as associate chair of the Department of Geography and Urban Studies.
